Character: Word

Character: Word is a custom application developed for a work by artist Maíra Dietrich. In a practice that brings language, form, writing, and systems of meaning into dialogue, Maíra envisioned a system in which each key pressed on a keyboard would trigger a specific sound previously recorded by the artist herself.

The project was built as a sonic keyboard. As visitors type, they activate sounds defined by the artist: recorded by her in a professional studio, these vocal exercises consist of impossible phonemes, consonant clusters, and vocalic fragments.

The work establishes a direct relationship between the gesture of writing and sonic response, producing a sense of estrangement that highlights the radical difference between written language and the performed sound of speech. The interface developed by uint was intentionally minimal, avoiding visual elements that might compete with its central action: writing and listening.

The application was delivered both as a standalone executable and as a web version. The executable allows the work to run reliably in exhibition contexts without requiring an internet connection, while also supporting long-term preservation in digital art collections. The web version makes it possible to present the work online as a piece of web art.

The work was first presented publicly as part of Scene: 9 Scenes, a performance conceived by Maíra Dietrich as the outcome of an artistic residency at YBYTU in São Paulo. In the artist's words, it is "a performance about the entanglement of language, body, and form, born from the desire to show how works are made—to speak by making." Within the performance, Character: Word is one of nine characters (Ventriloquist, Meter, Eye, Curtain, Hand, Word, Camera, Mouth, and Narrator), through which the audience is invited to understand the elements at play in the artist's creative process.
