An Updated Revolt

Cabanagem200 is an archive website developed for the Nheenga Cabana project by Giseli Vasconcelos and Pedro Victor Brandão. The work was commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro for the exhibition Acts of Revolt: Other Imaginaries of Independence, held in 2022.

The project draws from the Cabanagem, a popular revolt that took place in the province of Grão-Pará between 1835 and 1840, as well as from the writings of journalist and sociologist Lúcio Flávio Pinto from Pará. The creation of the artworks involved the use of image generation tools such as MidJourney, DALL-E 2, and Stable Diffusion (at the time in their early or beta versions) to create a contemporary iconography related to the revolutionary movement.

Documentation and Archiving

The website documents both the final results and the creative process behind the project. It includes images used and not used in the exhibition, generation prompts, digital files of large-format prints, the PDF of the special edition of Jornal Pessoal, exhibition views, press coverage, and technical information.

On the homepage, a selection of archive images is randomly updated with each visit. This feature allows the collection to be accessed in different ways each time without changing the site's main structure.

The platform also includes dark mode and decentralized file hosting. The goal was to preserve and make the project's materials available after the exhibition ended, maintaining public access to the archive, the creative process, and its documentation.
