The Anarchiving Game

Collective Memory

The Anarchiving Game is a platform created for The Sphere, an organization dedicated to researching alternative forms of funding, memory, and value circulation in the body-based arts. In 2024, the project received support from the New Models for Interdependence and Ownership in Art and Culture program, through Serpentine Galleries and its Future Art Ecosystems program, in partnership with RadicalXChange.

Built as a web3 platform, The Anarchiving Game organizes memory fragments related to the history of the organization.

The Anarchiving Game is a participatory web3 protocol that embodies the spirit of innovation and interdependence inherent to the body-based arts, allowing people to issue, share, and collect fragments of creative journeys as digital objects that propagate value.

These fragments can contain video, audio, images, text, PDFs, scripts, or other formats. Each item includes metadata describing relationships with creators, events, dates, locations, keywords, origins, destinations, senders, and recipients. Always expanding, this platform can be understood as a repository of gestures from different digital tribes, with a system for addressing ideas and values.

Interface

The interface offers different modes of navigation. A three-dimensional graph presents fragments as a network of relationships. A chronological list provides a more linear reading experience. Filters by media type, event, year, location, creator, and other categories help users explore the collection.

Fragments can be collected as ERC-1155 tokens. The smart contract logic includes value distribution between creators and the organization's common treasury. The creation interface allows authorized users to create new fragments, fill in metadata, upload media, define a price for collection, and establish the edition size.

Media files and metadata are hosted on IPFS. This infrastructure was chosen to increase content permanence and reduce dependence on centralized servers.

The project brings together archiving, data visualization, self-issuance, smart contracts, and creative interfaces. For uint studio, it was an integration between creative coding, Web3 systems, and the design of tools for collective research.

Reception

The platform was presented by Lene Vollhardt at the Beyond Cultures of Ownership symposium, organized by RadicalXChange in 2024 in Oakland, United States.

Erik Bordeleau wrote an essay in 2025 based on experiences from this project, formulating the idea of Anarchiving Collective Intelligence in the publication REINCANTAMENTO, edited by Alessandro Y. Longo.

The Anarchiving Game was presented by Lene Vollhardt and Alessandro Y. Longo at the group exhibition Grace is a Coin With More Than Two Sides, curated by Stina Gustafsson and Beth McCarthy during the Funding the Commons conference held in Berlin in June 2025.

Also in 2025, Erik conducted an interview-style conversation with Pedro Victor Brandão and Vitor Butkus about the creation of artistic infrastructures in Web3. The conversation was published as fragment #64 of The Anarchiving Game and presented during the quantumfagia gathering series, held at casa ngira in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In 2026, Lene Vollhardt mentioned the development of the platform in the context of the release of her film Swirls of Fortune, in an interview with Loius Jebb for the digital magazine Right-Click Save.
